Both were originally from Ilkal in Belagavi district and had been living together in a rented house in Jigani for the past three years. Police said the incident came to light on June 20, when the house owner noticed a foul smell emanating from the residence. Upon breaking open the door, the decomposed body of Akshata was found inside the house.

The accused and deceased had a long-standing live-in relationship. Akshata, who was previously married and had two children, had reportedly left her family to live with Nana Saheb in Jigani. The couple was employed in a private firm, earning modest incomes. According to police, financial strain and personal disputes had led to frequent quarrels between them. Investigators said the accused allegedly sent a large portion of the victim’s earnings to his family, which further contributed to tensions.

The situation reportedly worsened after the woman quit her job, leading to increased financial stress. During a recent argument, police explained, the dispute escalated, and the accused allegedly assaulted the victim before strangling her with a cloth-like material. He then fled the scene after allegedly taking cash and belongings from the house and locking it from outside. The body was discovered three days later after neighbours reported a strong foul smell from the house.
