"BJP Hatao, Beti Bachao!": Congress on International Women's Day

As the world celebrates International Women”s Day on Friday, the Congress launched a scathing attack on the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that the women of India “demand and deserve answers” to some pertinent questions.

In X, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh raises some questions to PM Modi and states that these are some key questions that women across the country are asking him. “We don’t expect the Prime Minister to do anything beyond paying salutary tributes to women. Nevertheless, here are some key questions that women across the country are asking him,” he writes.

At first, citing Manipur violence, Senior Congress leader asks: “Why has the Prime Minister not even bothered to visit the state?” Although BJP government was ruling both at the State and at the Centre, in the “state of virtual civil war” Manipur was undergoing since last year women have been the most affected parties; they are being assaulted and paraded naked, Congress leader reminds.

Next, Jairam Ramesh mentioned  the Prime Minister”s “silence” on the severe harassment allegations raised by women wrestlers against BJP MP and former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. He asks: “What is the Prime Minister’s stance on this issue? Does Modi consider Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh a member of ‘Modi ka Parivar?’”

Since the prices of food and essential items are high, Jairam Ramesh enquires whether the Prime Minister has to offer any plan to protect households from the “brunt of this price rise”? Following, the grand old party also stressed upon on the mass unemployment crisis in the country; in particular, how women job seekers are discouraged from seeking employment. Women are discouraged from pursuing employment, and dropped out of the workforce altogether, the Congress leader alleges. “The percentage of women in the labor force is now 20% lower than it was under Dr Manmohan Singh – a trend that can undermine the economy’s long term potential. Does the Prime Minister have a solution to bring women back into the economic mainstream?,” Jairam Ramesh said.

Slamming the Prime Minister”s much-lauded “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” Yojana, Congress alleges that since it came into force, close to 80 percent of the scheme’s budget is appropriated for advertisements. Senior Congress leader asks: “Does the Prime Minister have a more meaningful vision to stop female infanticide and promote women’s education? Or is the issue just another opportunity to slap his face on an advertisement and give him another means for branding himself?”

Jairam Ramesh, then concluded the tweet by proposing the slogan, “BJP Hatao, Beti Bachao!”.
