Congress announced that it has included the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in its crowd funding scheme. Addressing a press conference here, Congress treasurer Ajay Maken along with general secretary in charge communications, Jairam Ramesh and co-treasurer Vijay Inder Singla said that party was seeking donation corresponding to the number of 6,700 kilometres of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. Congress said the announcement got “tumultuous response” and was able to garner Rs 2 crore within two hours of the announcement.
He said the party has appealed people to contribute to this cause whatever they can contribute. Giving an example, he said, if somebody wants to contribute at the rate of one paise per kilometre, he/she can pay Rs 67 and if someone wants to pay at the rate of 10 paise per kilometre he/she can pay Rs 670.
Maken disclosed that today some party leaders paid at the rate of Rs 20 per kilometre to Rs 100 per kilometre each, saying that the amount ranged between Rs 1.34 lakhs to Rs 6.7 lakhs each. He said, every contributor who pays Rs 670 and higher will get a T Shirt signed by Rahul Gandhi. Others who pay Rs 67 will get a personal letter signed by Gandhi.
The Congress treasurer said that there was proper monitoring of the donations. The party had also added a “referee” column in the donation form. Everyone who contributes will mention the name of the person who motivated him/her for donation. This will encourage workers to motivate maximum people to donate as their efforts will be recorded and recognised.
Maken said, while the crowd funding scheme has generated about Rs 20 crores so far, including Rs 2 crores today only, the purpose is not only to generate funds but also to involve workers and general public and build up momentum.
