Today, November 26th marks a monumental day in Indian history: Constitution Day, also known as Samvidhan Divas.

This day commemorates the adoption of the Indian Constitution by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949. The Constitution came into effect on January 26, 1950, witnessing India’s transition into a sovereign republic.

Constitution Day also coincides with the 133rd birth anniversary of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar, the chairman of the drafting committee of the Constituent Assembly.

Dr Ambedkar played a pivotal role in building the Indian Constitution which was adopted after nearly three years of deliberation. The Constitution has undergone several amendments since its inception but remains the foundation of India’s democratic governance.

The Indian government declared November 26 as Constitution Day in 2015, to promote awareness about the Constitution’s values, rights and duties among citizens.

This day is an opportunity to reflect on the significance of the Constitution and its impact on Indian society. It stresses the importance of national unity, justice, liberty, equality and fraternity.

The Constituent Assembly, formed in December 1946 had 389 members, including prominent leaders like Dr. Ambedkar, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Sardar Patel.

The Assembly entrusted the task of drafting the Constitution to a committee chaired by Dr. Ambedkar. The draft was presented in 1948 and adopted on November 26, 1949, with a few amendments.

The Preamble declares India as a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic, aiming to secure justice, liberty and equality for all citizens and it is indispensable,e for every citizen to obey the constitution and to serve the nation as it says.

To celebrate 75 years of India’s Constitution, Union ministers embarked on the “Samvidhan Yatra” on November 25. President Droupadi Murmu addressed a joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament to mark the occasion and PM Modi also remembered the day as he spoke about it at the Central Hall of the old Parliament complex today.


A statue of Dr. Ambedkar was unveiled on the premises of the Supreme Court of India, portraying him in a lawyer’s attire, holding a copy of the Constitution and she also unwrapped the first Sanskrit copy of the Constitution and its Maithili version.
