Ambedkar Row: Parliament Adjourned As Opposition Amps Up Protest Against Amit Shah

The opposition vs. BJP row over Ambedkar continued to spiral with the both the Houses—Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha—adjourned until further notice within two minutes of convening after the opposition continued its protest over Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on Dr. BR Ambedkar.

INDIA alliance members began a protest march from Vijay Chowk to the Parliament with posters of the Dalit icon in hand. They continued their demands for an apology and resignation from Shah.

“Modi government is afraid. This government is afraid of discussing Adani. Now what he has done has revealed his true feelings for Ambedkar ji. So now they are afraid of the opposition, because now we are raising this issue. Our Constitution is the gift of Ambedkar ji. India will not tolerate his insult,” Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said.

The protests continue after yesterday’s ruckus in the Parliament premises when the ruling BJP and opposition MPs clashed.

An FIR was registered against Rahul Gandhi for allegedly pushing and injuring two BJP MPs—Pratap Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput—during protests in Parliament on Thursday. The party, however, dismissed the FIR as a “diversionary tactic” and called it a “badge of honour.”

The Congress filed a counter-complaint against BJP MPs at the Parliament House police station, accusing them of instigating the clash.

Meanwhile in Agartala, the state Congress held a protest ahead of Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to Tripura for the 72nd plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) starting Saturday.

Addressing the issue in a press conference on Thursday, former chief minister and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati said that Shah’s statement has insulted Ambedkar’s dignity and existence; she advised the Home Minister to take back his words and repent.

The uproar began when Shah said that taking Dr. BR Ambedkar’s name had become a “fashion” now. “If they took God’s name so many times, they would have got a place in heaven,” he said.

Soon enough, a protest erupted outside the Parliament with opposition MPs staging a protest, demanding his resignation and an apology for disrespecting the Dalit icon.
