Maharashtra: Dr. BR Ambedkar’s grandson, Prakash Ambedkar, criticised Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his comments on the Dalit icon, stating that they exemplified the “BJP-RSS’ hatred for Babasaheb.” His remarks come amidst an ongoing political row with opposition parties demanding an apology from and resignation of Shah for allegedly disrespecting Ambedkar.

Calling it their “same old mentality,” Prakash Ambedkar accused BJP-RSS of harbouring “hatred” for anti-caste reformers including Jyotirao Phule and Shahu Maharaj.

“When RSS wanted to have an Indian society influenced by Vedic religion and Manusmriti, Babasaheb proved to be a hurdle who they couldn’t overcome. Today, Babasaheb may be no more but RSS-BJP still fears him as his teachings and ideology lives on,” said Prakash Ambedkar who heads the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) party in an X post.

“Ambedkar dead is more dangerous than Ambedkar alive!!!” he added.

The VBA has organised a protest at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus at 2 pm today demanding an apology from and resignation of Shah for his “insulting” remarks against Ambedkar.

Speaking to media in Pune, he said that before the BJP, its parent organisations, Jan Sangh and RSS, had opposed Babasaheb while the Constitution was being adopted. “There is nothing new in the statement. They are not able to execute their old plans. Not because of Congress, but because of Babasaheb Ambedkar, and they will continue to sulk.”

The controversy erupted after Shah, while addressing the House during the debate on the Constitution yesterday, said that taking Dr. BR Ambedkar’s name had become a “fashion” now. “If they took God’s name so many times, they would have got a place in heaven,” he said.

His remarks sparked the opposition MPs staging a protest outside the Parliament and demanding his resignation for disrespecting the Dalit icon.

Congress president and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, observed that Shah, through his remarks, had revealed the true mindset of the BJP and the RSS, which is guided by the Manusmriti.

In response, Prime Minister Modi launched an attack on Congress, accusing the party of indulging in “every possible dirty trick to obliterate the legacy of Dr. Ambedkar” and “humiliate the SC/ST communities.”

Home Minister Amit Shah, in a press conference, strongly criticised the Congress, accusing it of being “anti-BR Ambedkar,” anti-reservation, and anti-Constitution.
