Degree Doesn’t Exist?': Lawyer Slams DU Over PM Modi's Degree After Delhi HC Defers Verdict

New Delhi: On Wednesday, August 20, the Delhi High Court differed the verdict regarding the disclosure of information with respect to the bachelor’s degree of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The court was hearing a plea filed by Delhi University (DU) challenging an order of the Central Information Commission (CIC) to reveal the information.

DU had filed a plea in 2017 against the CIC’s order which allowed inspection of records of students who had passed the BA programme in 1978. The Prime Minister is stated to have cleared the examination in the same year, as per the reports. Notably, the order was first stayed in 2017 during the first hearing. Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta appeared for the varsity and submitted that the impugned order passed by CIC was liable to be set aside.

Reacting to the verdict, advocate Prashant Bhushan expressed his doubt asking why should the Delhi University hide the Prime Minister’s degree credentials.

“Why should Modi object to its disclosure?,” the senior lawyer asked, adding if it is because he got a third division? Or because the “degree doesn’t exist.”

While hearing the case, the solicitor general said that the University has no reservation in showing the degree to the Court. However, he added it cannot put the record for scrutiny by strangers.

He further submitted that mere curiosity was not enough to approach Right to Information (RTI) forums.

Appearing for the RTI applicant, Senior Advocate Sanjay Hegde stated the applicant had filed an RTI application seeking result of all the students who appeared in BA in 1978 alongwith their roll number, name, marks and result pass or failed. However, Central Public Information Officer (CPIO) of the DU denied the information on the ground it qualified as “third party information”.
