The “Delhi Chalo” march will resume today (Wednesday). The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM), the two farmers bodies who are leading the protest have urged farmers across the country to converge in the national capital on March 6. Delhi Police has beefed up security at the Tikri, Singhu, and Ghazipur borders in view of the protests.
“This is the 23rd day of the protest commenced by the non-political entities KMM and SKM. Farmers from various states will commence their march towards Delhi today. They will not be using tractor-trolleys for the journey, hence, they might not reach Delhi today. We expect a clearer understanding of the situation by March 10, as previously mentioned,” the news agency PTI reports as the farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher is saying.
The agitating farmers have been camping at the Shambhu and the Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana after their their march was halted by security forces. The protesting farmers have been camping at various points in areas bordering Delhi along with their tractors, mini-vans, and pickup trucks, since February 13.
To further their demands, the agitating farmers have also called for a four-hour countrywide “rail roko” on March 10. Sarwan Singh Pandher said that the “rail roko” protest will be held in the country from 12 pm to 4.
Even though multiple rounds of consultations between farmer leaders and the government have occurred, it failed to arrive at a consensus.
The farmers protest titled ‘Delhi Chalo’ started on February 13. The demands of protesting farmers includes a legal guarantee of MSP for all 23 crops, implementation of Swaminathan Commission report for fair remuneration, pension for farmers and farm laborers, farm debt waiver, withdrawal of police cases, and “justice” for the victims of the Lakhimpur Kheri violence, reinstatement of the Land Accusation Act, 2013 and compensation for the families of the farmers who died during the 2020-21 protest.
