ED Raids Empuraan Producer Gokulam Gopalan's Offices In Kerala, Tamil Nadu

ED Raid: Amidst the widespread right-wing outrage over L2: Empuraan, the central probe agency, Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday conducted a raid at the movie’s producer Gokulam Gopalan’s multiple Chit fund offices in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. It is reported that the agency has alleged law violations against Gopalan in Chit fund transactions.

The searches are being undertaken under the provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). Gopalan owns  Sree Gokulam Chits, which has offices  in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Telangana, Puducherry, Maharashtra, New Delhi, Andhra Pradesh Pondicherry and Haryana.

Notably, Gokulam Chits had come under scrutiny in 2017 too for allegedly evading taxes. It is alleged that the company had hid significant amounts of income from its records—recovered bad debts and interest income included.

L2: Empuraan Controversy

One of the producers’ of the celebrated Lucifer sequel, Gopalan had expressed regret after right wing group including BJP’s ideological arm RSS unleashed attack against the movie makers due to the portrayal of events resembling the 2002 Gujarat riot, in which hundreds from the Muslim community were killed.

The RSS-affiliated publication, Organiser, published articles alleging that the film depicted Hindus as aggressors during the riots. The backlash forced team Empuraan to issue addressing the concerns of the critics. The makers have also re-edited the film, with cuts to 24 scenes and trimmed by two minutes and eight seconds.

Emuraan was jointly produced by Antony Perumbavoor, Subaskaran Allirajah and Gokulam Gopalan through Aashirvad Cinemas, Lyca Productions, and Sree Gokulam Movies.
