Students from Bharti College alleged that a housekeeping worker has recorded their video of changing clothes in the IIT Delhi”s washroom. The incident happened during a fashion show programme.
According to the students, the IIT Delhi did not take any actions against the accused nor it provided any support to the students. Though they immediately complained the incident and demanded to take action against the accused and the authorities refused to budge, said a release by student organisation NSUI.
It said the girls were robbed of their “privacy and dignity” by the man”s “disgusting act”.
The release said that the authorities of IIT Delhi refused to take actions against the “culprit” nor did they guarantee the video will be deleted to avoid circulating. The authorities did not provide any medical or psychological aid for the students or any compensation for the “damages” caused to the “reputation and mental health” of the students.
“We feel cheated, humiliated and violated by this incident. We demand justice and accountability from IIT Delhi and its authorities”, said the students.
However, in a statement, the IIT Delhi said that the accused of the “unfortunate and regrettable incident dated October 6, 2023”, was immediately handed over to Delhi police. According to the IIT Delhi authority, the culprit was an employee of a House Keeping Services’ agency. As per the IIT, the institute “treated the matter with utmost seriousness and urgency it deserved”. It is also said that the institute practices a zero-tolerance policy towards incidents like this.
Senior police officer at Krishnagarh police station said, the accused, who is a 20 year old “contractual sweeper” was detained. A case under the Section 354C – which is “voyeurism” – of the Indian Penal Code was charged against him.
