Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday filed a legal notice against The Indian Express alleging that they have published ‘defamatory news’ against him. It further alleged that the news paper has published ‘defamatory news items’ that was in ‘sinister design to defame’ the BJP leader without proper verification of facts.

In the legal notice sent to the news portal, they quoted the statement “the cases against Assam Chief minister Hemanta Biswa Sarma and former Maharashtra Chief minister Ashok Chavan are also stuck. Biswa faced CBI questioning and raids in 2014, in the Sarada chit fund scam, but the case against him has not moved since 2015 when he joined the BJP” to be defaming the BJP leader.

The aforesaid statement was published in an article dated on 2nd April. Clarifying the statement, Himanta Biswa claimed that he has never been included in the accused list. During the investigation, the CBI has recorded the statement as a witness. The statement further added that he was added to the witness list when he was an active member of the Indian National Congress.

The investigation was completed and the charge sheet was filed during at the point of time Biswa was neither an active member of Congress nor BJP. The statement stated that Biswa was never benefitted during the investigation. The notice also stated that the Assam chief minister had no involvement or allegation in the Louis Berger case.

Himanta Biswa Sarma has joined the saffron party due to the political differences with then chief minister of Assam and Rahul Gandhi.

The Assam chief minister has called the allegation and accusations made by the publication to be ‘false, baseless, concocted, fabricated and imaginary’. He further alleged that the news article was published by a ‘certain vested interest circle to propagate their own political agenda’.
