How The Kashmir Leadership Reacted To The SC Verdict On The Abrogation Of Article 370

Following the Supreme Court ruling backing the decision of the central government on the abrogation of Article 370, the political leadership of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir has come out expressing their opinions on the Court verdict. The abrogation of Article 370 of the Indian constitution had ended the special status conferred to the erstwhile state. A five-judge Constitution bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and comprising Justices S K Kaul, Sanjeev Khanna, B R Gavai and Surya Kant, had ruled that article 370 was a temporary provision intended to make the merger of Jammu and Kashmir in the Union of India easier. The Court upheld the abrogation of article 370, saying it is constitutionally valid.

How the JK leaders see the verdict

National Conference leader and Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah expressed his disappointment over the SC judgment and said ‘’the struggle will continue’’.

“Disappointed but not disheartened. The struggle will continue. It took the BJP decades to reach here. We are also prepared for the long haul” Omar Abdullah wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Referring to the SC ruling on the abrogation of article 370, Jammu and Kashmir, Peoples Conference chief, Sajad Lone said the verdict is “Disappointing”. “The Supreme Court verdict on Article 370 is disappointing. Justice yet again eludes the people of J and K. Article 370 may have been legally obliterated but will always remain a part of our political aspirations” he wrote.

He also hoped for a future date saying ‘’Justice wakes up from its slumber of pretence’’.

Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) chairman Ghulam Nabi Azad called the verdict “sad and unfortunate. The people of the region are not happy with the verdict but we have to accept it,”” he told reporters, reports NDTV.

People”s Democratic Party’s Mehbooba Mufti took to X terming the verdict a ‘’loss of the idea of India’’. “The people of Jammu and Kashmir are not going to lose hope or give up. Our fight for honour and dignity will continue regardless. This isn”t the end of the road for us. This is the loss of the idea of India”.
