At least two people were killed and 20 injured as 18 coaches of Mumbai-Howrah Mail derailed in Jharkhand in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The rescue operations are progressing and several trains have been cancelled due to the derailment.

The accident occurred at 3:43 am on July 30, CPRO South Eastern Railway confirmed. Train number 12810, Howrah-Mumbai Mail, derailed near Badabamboo, under the Chakradharpur Division of the South Eastern Railway.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday slammed Central government over series of train accidents. In a social media post on X, Ms Banerjee wrote: “Another disastrous rail accident! Howrah- Mumbai mail derails in Chakradharpur division in Jharkhand today early morning, multiple deaths and huge number of injuries are the tragic consequences.”

“I seriously ask: is this governance? This series of nightmares almost every week, this unending procession of deaths and injuries on railway tracks: for how long shall we tolerate this? Will there be no end to the callousness of Government of India?!,” she added.

Similarly, attacking the Centre and the railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw,  ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) wrote on X: “Why are the top BJP leaders sitting in Delhi and the real (railway) minister himself silent on the continuous rail accidents happening in the country?”

Last month, in the Dibrugarh Express train accident, 4 people died and 31 injured as several coaches derailed in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda district. In June, 9 killed and at least 40 injured as goods train rams Kanchanjunga Express in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district.
