New Delhi: In an exclusive ANI podcast, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath affirmed that Muslims are safe in Uttar Pradesh if Hindus are safe.

It was while responding to a question raised by ANI journalist Smita Prakash in her recent podcast episode, the CM said, “Muslims are the safest in Uttar Pradesh. If Hindus are safe, then Muslims are also safe here.”

When there were riots in UP before 2017, if Hindu shops and houses were burning, then Muslim shops and houses were also burning, he said. But the riots stopped, since the BJP came to power in the State in 2017, UP CM stated.

Minorities are living safely in India, however, citing the situation in Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan, he said that the situation is not same for the Hindu families there.

“A Muslim family living among 100 Hindu families is safe. It has the freedom to do all its religious deeds. But let alone one, even if 50 Hindu families live among 100 Muslim families, can they be safe? No. Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan are examples before you. If someone is being hit, we should be careful before we get hit…,” Adityanath told Prakash.

In the interview, UP CM also said that he wishes for everyone’s happiness and expressed his commitment to serve everyone equally.

Recently, Aditynath-led government faced sharp criticism for covering the mosques in the State with tarpaulin during Holi festival. The chief minister said there were strict instructions not to throw colours at the mosque, but colours do not harm anyone.

“If you are playing with colours, it does not harm anyone’s existence. You tell me. It is not like that; there are rallies during Muharram. Doesn’t the shadow of their flag fall on any Hindu house near the temple? Does it make the Hindu house impure? These are strict instructions not to put anything that is not coloured. But even then, if it has fallen, then the administration is cleaning it and repainting it,” CM said.
