IMD Issues Red Alert As Heavy Rainfall Grips Gujarat

On Monday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued ‘heavy to very heavy’ rainfall in several districts of Gujarat, such as Vadodara, Navsari, Surat, Bharuch, Valsad, Bhavnagar, and Amreli, till Tuesday.

Gujarat has been experiencing rain showers over the weekend leading to waterlogged streets, infrastructural damage, and flooding. With more rainfall predicted to hit the state, the situation is expected to get worse.

At least seven people are still missing after a trolley carrying 17 washed away. A search operation by the NDRF is underway in Morbi district to locate the missing people.

A holiday has been declared for all primary schools on Tuesday by the education department.

Ahmedabad received over 86 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, ending only at 6 am on Monday morning. Apart from Gujarat, some areas in Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh are also expected to face extremely heavy rainfall from Monday.

Three trains including Ahmedabad-Vadodara Intercity Express, Vadodara-Jamnagar Intercity Express and Vadodara-Ahmedabad Intercity Express have bee affected by the heavy downpour, as per reports.

The state chief secretary advised the administration to stay vigilant in regions where large crowds are expected, especially during the month of Shravan.

After water levels witnessed a substantial rise, nearly 72 reservoirs were put on high alert, while 15 were put on regular alert.

Several districts in South Gujarat have received over 105 percent of their average rainfall so far. It is the highest in the state. Districts including Narmada, Rajkot, Morbi, Saurashtra, Tapi, Mahisagar, Vadodara, and Dahod.
