A 45-year-old Indian climber from West Bengal died while descending from the summit of Mt Everest, becoming the second foreigner to lose his life on the world’s highest peak during the current climbing season, The Himalayan Times reported on Friday.

The deceased, identified as Subrata Ghosh, was part of the Mountaineering Association of Krishnanagar–Snowy Everest Expedition 2025.

He had successfully reached the 8,848.86-metre summit late in the afternoon on Saturday with his guide but showed signs of altitude sickness during his descent, according to Bodhraj Bhandari, Managing Director of Snowy Horizon Treks.

Ghosh reached the summit at around 2 pm, which is considered quite late. While descending, he became extremely exhausted and “refused to move”, said Bhandari, quoting Ghosh’s guide Champal Tamang.

Ghosh died just below the Hillary Step, near the summit point of Mt Everest.

Tamang reportedly returned alone to Camp IV late that night and informed the team about the tragic incident the following morning.

Efforts are currently underway to retrieve Ghosh’s body and bring it back to the base camp.

This marks the second fatality on Everest this season. Earlier this week, 45-year-old Philipp II Santiago from the Philippines died while preparing for his summit push on May 14.

Despite the dangers, Everest remains a major draw for mountaineers from around the globe. Over 450 climbers have been granted permits to attempt the ascent this year, and more than 50 have already reached the summit successfully.
