National Conference (NC) vice president Omar Abdulla today took to his social media platform questioning the intervention of the Indian Army in the “divisive issue” of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). The former chief minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir asked if it is appropriate for the Indian Army to get involved in the divisive issue of the uniform civil code.
He further reminded the sensitiveness of areas like Kashmir and noted the apolitical and areligious nature of the Indian Army. “There is a reason the Indian Army has remained apolitical & areligious,” Mr Abdulla noted.
The National Conference leader commenting on the decision of the Indian army to organise a legal awareness seminar on the subject “Navigating legal frontiers: Understanding Indian Penal Code 2023 and the quest for Uniform Civil Code” The seminar is scheduled to be held at the Kashmir University auditorium on March 26, Times of India reported.
However, Mr Abdullah said in his pot on X (formerly Twitter) further that this ill-advised UCC seminar is a threat to both these basic tenets, noting the apolitical nature of the Army remained so far. “Going ahead with this risks opening up the army to charges of getting involved in the murky world of politics coupled with interfering in religious matters,” Mr Abdullah wrote. He also shared the details of the event along with his post.
