Jahangir Khan Arrested: Why The Trinamool Leader Was On The Run After Bengal Polls
Jahangir Khan, a prominent leader of the All India Trinamool Congress and former candidate from the Falta Assembly constituency, was arrested by the Special Task Force (STF) of West Bengal Police near the Nepal border on June 8.
According to police officials, Khan was apprehended from Panitanki Bazaar in Darjeeling district during a joint operation conducted by the STF and local police.
Investigators suspect that he was attempting to leave the country through the border region. He is expected to be produced before a court on June 9.
Khan had been absconding since the controversy surrounding the Falta Assembly election. Allegations of electoral malpractice during polling on April 29 prompted the Election Commission to cancel the election and order a re-poll on May 21.
Before the re-poll, Khan withdrew his candidature.

The seat was eventually won by the Bharatiya Janata Party with a margin of more than one lakh votes.
Considered a close associate of Abhishek Banerjee, Khan has long been an influential political figure in the South 24 Parganas district.
Over the years, several local residents had accused him of land grabbing, extortion, intimidation, and electoral violence, allegations that had frequently sparked political controversy in the region.
Soon after news of his arrest emerged, angry residents allegedly vandalised his office in Falta. Reports suggest that furniture was damaged and relief materials were discovered stored inside the premises.
