A novel tender floated by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) in 2019, is now at the centre of US district indictment which has alleged Adani Group Chairman Gautam S Adani, along with others who had offered Rs 2,029 crore in bribes to Indian government officials.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh highlighting the involvement of SECI in the corruption wrote on X, “The key player in this sordid Adani corruption scandal that has been fully exposed by US agencies is the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), a Govt of India company.”

The Congress leader in his post stated that SECI had called for the bids from private companies and conducted the reverse auction for selecting the winner and based on its, recommendations, different states entered into purchase agreements.

Referring it as ‘SEBI’ kind of situation, Jairam Ramesh highlighted the need to investigate SECI as well. “Bribery has been documented in the US indictments in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, and J&K (after it became a UT).”

He in his post also pointed out the solar contracts that were pushed through at exorbitant rates in Maharashtra and Rajasthan in recent months.

Billionaire Gautam Adani, the founder and chairman of Indian conglomerate Adani Group has been charged in the US with bribery and fraud on Wednesday. The case charged by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) with allegedly defrauding American investors and bribing officials.

Adani, 62, his nephew Sagar Adani, 30 and other executives of Adani Green Energy Ltd and Azure Power Global Ltd are accused of conspiracy to commit securities and wire fraud, as well as substantive securities fraud.

A judge has issued arrest warrants for Gautam Adani and Sagar Adani and prosecutors plan to hand those warrants to foreign law enforcement, as per PTI.
