Ahmedabad, Gujarat: In one of the worst aviation disasters in India’s recent history, an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner en route to London crashed in the Meghani Nagar area near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Ahmedabad, at around 1:38 pm on Thursday.
Moments after the police confirmed that all 242 passengers survived the crash, a lone survivor emerged. Identified as a 40-year-old Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British-Indian, the passenger was seen walking around, his white t-shirt and dark trousers barely scorched. The sole survivor reportedly jumped out of his seat, 11A, confirmed Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik.
The aircraft was carrying 242 people, including 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, one Canadian national, and seven Portuguese nationals. The crew included two pilots and ten cabin crew members.
Authorities have yet to confirm the cause of the crash. Investigation is underway.
The flight, Air India AI171, had just taken off when it reportedly went down minutes later, erupting into a massive fireball upon impact.
Among the victims on the ground, at least five medical students from BJ Medical College, whose hostel was directly struck by the aircraft, died. Many more are injured, and rescue operations are currently underway.
Roads leading to the crash site have been sealed off, and emergency personnel are working to control the fire and locate survivors. The injured have been rushed to nearby hospitals.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones, and with those who have been injured. Tata Group will provide ₹1 crore to the families of each person who has lost their life in this tragedy. Air India has issued a notification stating that it is organizing two relief flights, one each from Delhi and Mumbai, to Ahmedabad for the next of kin of passengers and Air India staff.

According to reports, 40-year-old Vishwash Kumar Ramesh was seen walking around after the crash. The sole survivor, a UK national, reportedly jumped out of his seat, 11A. A video of the survivor has gone viral. He can be seen walking with a limp, indicating a leg injury, with blood stains and smudges of soot on his clothes.
He was reportedly returning to the UK after a visit to India. The man had taken the flight along with his brother, Ajay Kumar Ramesh, who was also on board, whom he is trying to find.

The 25 individuals listed are the people who were injured on the ground when the Air India flight crashed at the hostel of BJ Medical College. Almost all of the people who have been injured are around 18-20 years old.

Dhananjay Dwivedi, Additional Chief Secretary, Gujarat Health and Family Welfare Department said that about 50 injured people have been brought to Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad and are being treated. “DNA testing arrangements have been made at B.J. Medical, so families and close ones of the flight passengers, especially their parents and children, are requested to submit their samples at the location. So that the victims are identified at the earliest,” he added.
