Ahmedabad, Gujarat: In one of the worst aviation disasters in India’s recent history, an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner en route to London crashed in the Meghani Nagar area near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Ahmedabad, at around 1:38 pm on Thursday. 

Moments after the police confirmed that all 242 passengers survived the crash, a lone survivor emerged. Identified as a 40-year-old Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British-Indian, the passenger was seen walking around, his white t-shirt and dark trousers barely scorched. The sole survivor reportedly jumped out of his seat, 11A, confirmed Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik.

The aircraft was carrying 242 people, including 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, one Canadian national, and seven Portuguese nationals. The crew included two pilots and ten cabin crew members. 

Authorities have yet to confirm the cause of the crash. Investigation is underway.

The flight, Air India AI171, had just taken off when it reportedly went down minutes later, erupting into a massive fireball upon impact. 

Among the victims on the ground, at least five medical students from BJ Medical College, whose hostel was directly struck by the aircraft, died. Many more are injured, and rescue operations are currently underway.

Roads leading to the crash site have been sealed off, and emergency personnel are working to control the fire and locate survivors. The injured have been rushed to nearby hospitals.

Tata Sons Chairman, N Chandrasekaran, announced that the company will provide Rs 1 crore to the families of each person who lost their life in the crash, along with paying the medical expenses of those injured.

“We are deeply anguished by the tragic event involving Air India Flight 171. No words can adequately express the grief we feel at this moment. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones, and with those who have been injured. Tata Group will provide ₹1 crore to the families of each person who has lost their life in this tragedy. We will also cover the medical expenses of those injured and ensure that they receive all necessary care and support. Additionally, we will provide support in the building up of the B J Medical’s hostel. We remain steadfast in standing with the affected families and communities during this unimaginable time.”

12 June 2025, 08:00 pm: Air India Organizes Relief Flights For Next Kin Of Passengers

Air India has issued a notification stating that it is organizing two relief flights, one each from Delhi and Mumbai, to Ahmedabad for the next of kin of passengers and Air India staff.

Details of the flights:  IX1555 – Delhi-Ahmedabad Time of departure: 2300 hrs on 12 June IX1556 – Ahmedabad-Delhi Time of departure: 0110 hrs on 13 June AI1402 – Mumbai-Ahmedabad Time of departure: 2300 hrs on 12 June AI1409 – Ahmedabad-Mumbai Time of departure: 0115 hrs on 13 June.

“Next of kin of passengers and staff in Delhi and Mumbai wanting to travel on these flights can call our hotline on 1800 5691 444. Additionally, those coming in from international destinations and wanting to travel can call our hotline on +91 8062779200,” the group added in a social media post.

12 June 2025, 07:36 pm: A Lone Survivor Emerges

According to reports, 40-year-old Vishwash Kumar Ramesh was seen walking around after the crash. The sole survivor, a UK national, reportedly jumped out of his seat, 11A. A video of the survivor has gone viral. He can be seen walking with a limp, indicating a leg injury, with blood stains and smudges of soot on his clothes.

He was reportedly returning to the UK after a visit to India. The man had taken the flight along with his brother, Ajay Kumar Ramesh, who was also on board, whom he is trying to find.

The 25 individuals listed are the people who were injured on the ground when the Air India flight crashed at the hostel of BJ Medical College. Almost all of the people who have been injured are around 18-20 years old.

Dhananjay Dwivedi, Additional Chief Secretary, Gujarat Health and Family Welfare Department said that about 50 injured people have been brought to Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad and are being treated. “DNA testing arrangements have been made at B.J. Medical, so families and close ones of the flight passengers, especially their parents and children, are requested to submit their samples at the location. So that the victims are identified at the earliest,” he added.

“If relatives of the passengers and other injured who have been brought to the Civil Hospital have to make any inquiry, Civil Hospital Ahmedabad has issued two helpline numbers – 6357373831 and 6357373841. You can contact these numbers for any help…”

According to reports, all 242 passengers aboard, including 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, one Canadian national, and seven Portuguese nationals, have died, confirmed Ahmedabad Commissioner G.S. Malik to News Agency Associated Press.

According to a statement released by the DGCA, there were 242 person on board the aircraft, consisting of 2 pilots and 10 cabin crew. The aircraft was under the command of Capt Sumeet Sabharwal, a LTC with 8200 Hrs of experience, with First Officer Clive Kundar. 1100Hrs of flying experience.

“As per ATC, aircraft departed from Ahmadabad at 1339 IST (0809 UTC) from runway 23. It gave a MAYDAY Call to ATC, but thereafter, no response was given by the aircraft to the calls made by ATC. Aircraft immediately after departure from Runway 23, fell on the ground outside the airport perimeter. Heavy black smoke was seen coming from the accident site,” it said.
