LoP Rahul Gandhi Visits Chamar Studio in Mumbai
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, visited Chamar Studio in Dharavi, Mumbai, where he engaged with designer Sudheer Rajbhar and his team of artisans. The studio, known for its innovative approach to craftsmanship, repurposes recycled tyres to create handcrafted bags while honouring the heritage of the Dalit leather-working community. By combining traditional artistry with modern entrepreneurship, Chamar Studio not only preserves cultural craftsmanship but also provides economic empowerment to skilled artisans in Dharavi.
During his visit, Rahul Gandhi underscored the significance of inclusive production networks that offer fair opportunities to marginalised entrepreneurs, particularly Dalits and other underrepresented communities who often face barriers in accessing markets and institutional support. He described Chamar Studio as a model for his vision of “production and participation,” where artisans receive the necessary resources and networks to scale their work on a global level.
Accompanying him was Ramchet Mochi, a skilled cobbler from Uttar Pradesh whom Gandhi has mentored since meeting him last year. Ramchet’s presence encouraged meaningful exchanges among artisans, highlighting the need for collaborative efforts to expand traditional craftsmanship and ensure economic self-reliance.
The visit reinforced Rahul Gandhi’s commitment to fostering sustainable livelihoods for artisans, strengthening India’s creative industries, and promoting equitable growth across all sectors of society.
