Gurugram, Haryana: On July 10, a father shot down his own daughter, a 25-year-old former tennis player, Radhika Yadav, who is currently running a sports academy, allegedly over conflicts regarding the latter’s financial independence and personal choices, including Instagram reels.

The father, Deepak Yadav, a 49-year-old retired bank employee, allegedly grew grudge over his daughter’s career, including the opening of the tennis academy and her appearance in a music video after being mocked for living off his daughter’s income by his villagers, NDTV reported, citing police sources.

On Thursday, while confessing to the murder during interrogation, Deepak told officials that he was mocked and taunted frequently by the villagers in Wazirabad, his native place, for depending on his daughter’s income for living. He said that whenever he visited his native place, people used to taunt him, suggesting he lives off his daughter’s earnings.

“This troubled me a lot. Some people even questioned my daughter’s character. I told my daughter to close her tennis academy, but she refused,” the news portal quoted the accused father.

After sustaining an injury during a match, Radhika paused her game, and instead started to coach young players by opening an academy. The father started opposing his daughter’s academy after being humiliated by the comments from villagers about relying on his daughter’s income. He said he felt ashamed after hearing those remarks, and asked her daughter to leave the academy. The tension remained for months between the duo, culminating in the murder.

The father was also triggered further by his daughter’s appearance in a song titled Karwaan a year ago. Deepak had asked her to delete it from her social media accounts.

Culminating his frustration with his daughter, Deepak took his licensed revolver and shot his daughter three times in the back while she was preparing food in the kitchen around 10:30 am. Kuldeep Yadav, the younger brother of the accused and Radhika’s uncle, said he heard a loud sound upstairs and saw his niece lying motionless while the revolver was on the floor when he reached the site.

As per the report, Radhika’s mother was present in the house at the time of the shooting but allegedly declined to give a written statement as she claimed she had a fever while confining herself in her room.
