"No Further Tweets . . .": Delhi High Court Tells To Shyam Meera Singh

As the defamation case is going on, YouTuber and journalist Shyam Meera Singh told the Delhi High Court that he will delete his tweets posted on Friday concerning the case. Besides, his counsel also affirmed the court that his client would not tweet about the case while it is going on.

It was when Justice Manoj Jain expressed his displeasure over Shyam Meera Singh”s tweets over the ongoing case his counsel extended the assurance.

“No further tweets while the matter is sub judice… I want your client (Shyam Meera Singh) to be responsible. If he is a journalist, he needs to be responsible. Please do not make any tweets which interfere with the justice delivery system,” Bar and Bench quotes as Justice Jain is saying.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has sued Shyam Meera Singh for defamation in connection to latter”s YouTube video alleging that the Dera Sacha Sauda chief has “fooled” followers. Shyam Meera Singh uploaded the video, titled “How Gurmeet Ram Rahim fooled his Bhakts?” on December 17 this year and the thumbnail of the video was “Ram Rahim ka asli sach (Ram Rahim’s real truth)”.

Advocate Rajat Aneja appeared for Ram Rahim on Friday claimed that Shyam Meera Singh is a habitual offender and he refused to delete the video despite receiving a legal notice, Bar and Bench reports.

“He (Shyam Meera Singh) used to be a journalist with Aaj Tak but he was fired for insulting the Prime Minister… An FIR has also been filed against him in Uttar Pradesh for insulting the state’s Chief minister,” Bar and Bench reports as Aneja told the court.

Every second that the video was available on YouTube, it was damaging Gurmeet Ram Rahim”s reputation, senior Advocate Mohit Mathur, also appearing for the Ram Rahim told the court.

However, the Court has not passed any orders instructing Shyam Meera Singh to delete the allegedly defamatory video so far.

The Dera Sacha Sauda chief was sentenced to 20-year jail term in 2017 for raping two women disciples. In 2021, he along with four others were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for his involvement in murders of journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati and Ranjit Singh, a former manager of his sect in 2002. Earlier this month, the Punjab and Haryana high court questioned the paroles and liberties permitted to Ram Rahim. To this, Chief Minister Lal Khattar has responded that they are allotted to every prisoner with good jail conduct.

Meanwhile, Shyam Meera Singh told the court that his video was based on a 2018 book written by journalist Anurag Tripathi. Delhi High Court will next hear the case on January 4.
