"Opening Gateways For Women Power": PM Modi On Women Reservation

PM Narendra Modi talked about the introduction of the Women Reservation Bill in the Parliament during the special session being held at the new Parliament building. The bill aims to provide one-third reservation for women in Lok Sabha and State Assemblies.

“On this historic occasion in the new Parliament building, as the first proceeding of the House, the beginning of all the Parliamentarians opening gateways for women power is being done with this crucial decision. Taking forward our resolve of women-led development, our government is bringing an important constitutional amendment bill. The bill is aimed at expanding the membership of women in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. “Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam” will further empower our democracy,” said PM Modi in Lok Sabha today.

The Women”s Reservation bill, aiming to provide one-third of reservation for women in Lok Sabha and State Assemblies will be proposed in the Lok Sabha at the new parliament building today at 3 pm. Union Cabinet had cleared the bill on Monday. The statement of  purpose of the bill states the extreme importance of women participation in policy making that will lead the goal of making India a developed country by 2047.

The bill will continue for 15 years. It will come to effect after a delimitation exercise is undertaken. According to the bill, the seats reserved for women will be rotated after each delimitation exercise. This 128th Constitutional (Amendment) Bill, 2023 states that, “Seats shall be reserved for women in the House of the People. As nearly as may be, one-third of the total number of seats reserved under clause (2) of Article 330 shall be reserved for women belonging Scheduled Castes or the Scheduled Tribes”, it also states that “As nearly as may be, one-third (including the number of seats reserved for women belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes) of the total number of seats to be filled by direct election to the House of the People shall be reserved for women”.

The Women”s Reservation Bill is the first Bill to be introduced in the new Parliamentary building during special parliament session. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the moment as “God-given opportunity. “Today, God has given me the opportunity to take this forward…..our government is bringing a new Bill today on Women”s participation in both Houses”. He also spoke about how Women”s Reservation Bill was introduced during Atal Bihari Vajpayee”s regime and could not be passed due to the lack of majority.
