
Pakistan "Peacefully" Hands Over BSF Jawan Detained After Accidental Border Crossing
Pakistan Rangers have handed over BSF Jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw, who had been in their custody for nearly three weeks, to India on Wednesday, according to a statement issued by the the BSF.
The Jawan was held by Pakistan after he accidentally crossed the international border on April 23, a day after terrorists killed 26 tourists in the popular tourist spot of Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir. This incident occurred as the tensions between the two nuclear armed rivals started to escalate following the terrorist attack. The BSF jawan crossed the international border in Punjab’s Ferozepur district. The jawan was handed over through the Joint Check Post Attari, Amritsar.

“Today BSF Jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw, who had been in the custody of Pakistan Rangers since 23 April 2025, was handed over to India at about 10: 30 hours through the Joint Check Post Attari, Amritsar. The handover was conducted peacefully and in accordance with established protocols,” BSF said in a statement.
Pakistan Rangers apprehended Constable PK Shaw of the 182nd Battalion of the BSF during a routine patrol. One of the personnel from the Siskan Guard unit of the BSF, the jawan, who are tasked with facilitating and protecting Indian farmers cultivating land along the zero line, accidentally crossed the international border.

Earlier, there were reports that the talks are underway to bring back the jawan detained by Pakistan Rangers. The tensions following the terror attack delayed the Jawan’s return.
Jawan’s pregnant wife Rajani, his seven-year-old son and other family members had requested the authorities to ensure the officer’s return amid conflict with Pakistan.
