"Poignant Sorrow And Grief": World Leaders Express Condolences On Death Of Dr Manmohan Singh

Condolences poured in at the news of death of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. Global leaders mourned death of the legendary leader, recalling warm relations they shared and his great contributions.

Former President of Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed said that he found Manmohan Singh as a “benevolent father figure” and a good friend of Maldives. Taking to X, he wrote, “So sad to hear Manmohan Singh has passed. I always found him a delight to work with, and like a benevolent father figure. He was a good friend of the Maldives”.

 

Hamid Karzai, Former President of Afghanistan, said that India has lost one of its most illustrious sons. Calling Singh an “unwavering ally and friend to the people of Afghanistan”, Karzai and expressed his deepest condolences.

“India has lost one of its most illustrious sons. #Dr_Manmohan_Singh was an unwavering ally and friend to the people of #Afghanistan. Denis Alipov, Russian Ambassador to India, said that death of the former Prime Minister is a moment of poignant sorrow and grief for India and Russia.

“It is moment of poignant sorrow and grief for India and for Russia. Dr Manmohan Singh’s contribution to our bilateral ties was immeasurable. His suave demeanor was always endearing as unquestionable was his expertise as an economist and his commitment to the progress of India”, he said.

 

Dr Manmohan Singh died on Thursday night due to age related illness. He was 92 years old. He was a visionary leader of India who helped the country to stand on its own legs during financial crisis. He served as the 13th Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014.

He is the third longest-serving prime minister after Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi. Dr Singh was the first Sikh and non-Hindu prime minister of India. He is widely regarded as the architect of India’s economic reforms.
