Karnataka lawmaker and son of politician HD revanna Prajwal Revanna, who fled to Germany last month after being accused of sexual abuse, was arrested just after midnight upon his arrival at Bengaluru”s Kempegowda International Airport. The Janata Dal-Secular (JDS) leader, also the grandson of former prime minister HD Deve Gowda, who returned on Lufthansa flight LH0764, was taken into custody by a special police team investigating the allegations against him. Prajwal Revanna, a candidate from BJP-JDS alliance in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, left India one month ago after several videos of him, allegedly of sexual abuse of many women, started circulating.
After he was arrested from the airport, he was taken to the CID office in Bengaluru. As per reports, Mr Revanna, was detained by the immigration authorities as a lookout circular was issued against him, and then handed over to the Karnataka Police. Earlier, before he landed in Bengaluru, security arrangements were stepped up at the CID office.
Reports have said that the arrested leader will be questioned about his role in the obscene video case the entire night and then will be taken for medical examination in the morning.
Revanna is accused by multiple women of forcing them into sexual acts that were filmed. Sources indicate that he had previously cancelled flights back to India on two occasions.
On Thursday, a special court in Bengaluru rejected his anticipatory bail request.
In a video released recently from an unknown location from Europe, reportedly from Germany, Prajwal Revanna claimed that he had to isolate himself because of the political conspiracy. He also added that the that he travelled as per his earlier plan and there was no case booked. “When I received the first notice I sought seven days’ time through my advocate,” he said.
In the video, he accused Rahul Gandhi and many other Congress leaders of hatching conspiracy against him, and apologised to his family members and the JDS party workers.
“I apologise to my parents, grandfather, uncle H D Kumaraswamy and JD(S) workers. I was in depression. I will come (back to India) and appear before the SIT on May 31,” he then said.
“I will cooperate to the best of my abilities and provide all answers. I have full faith in the legal system (and) I will come out of these false cases against me. I have the blessings of God and my family…,” he added.
Karnataka government had formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter. Before that, the alleged perpetrator has left the country for Germany and Opposition parties questioned the NDA alliance partners in Karnataka and their leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and JDS’s former Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy on the matter. There were reports that a BJP leader from Hassan who was aware about the videos had informed the BJP leadership in December last year.
