Om Birla, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Rajasthan was elected as the new Lok Sabha speaker on Wednesday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Om Birla on his re-election.

“It’s a matter of honour that you have been elected to this chair for the second time,” he said. The prime minister said that Mr Birla would play significant role in ensuring that the House meets the expectations of the people.

“I congratulate you on behalf of the entire House and look forward to your guidance for the next five years,” PM Modi said congratulating Birla.

Commenting on his pleasant smile, Modi added “Your sweet smile keeps the entire House happy”.

Being denied the assurance that an opposition member would be given the post of Deputy Speaker, which is the tradition, the Congress and the INDIA bloc put forth the decision to conduct an election for the post of Speaker at the last minute and fielded K Suresh as its candidate against the BJP’s pick Om Birla.

Birla got elected as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha for the second time after PM Modi moved a motion that was adopted by the House through a voice vote.

Hailing Birla’s role as a parliamentarian, Modi said that his work “should be an inspiration for new Lok Sabha members”.

“The conduct of members and their accountability increase faith of people in Parliamentary democracy… The previous Lok Sabha clocked 97 per cent productivity – highest in 25 years… I am confident that under your leadership, 18th Lok Sabha will fulfil the expectations of people,” the PM said in the House.

Underlining the achievements of the 17th Lok Sabha under Birla’s leadership, Modi said that the works that were not done during the 70 years of independence were made possible by Om Birla’s chairmanship. “I am very confident that the country will always be proud of the achievements of the 17th Lok Sabha…” he added.
