In its post, India Post affirmed that features such as person-specific delivery, delivery receipts and real-time tracking, and legal validity & acknowledgements will remain the same.

“In order to streamline mail operations, improve delivery timelines, and optimize logistics resources, the Department of Posts has rationalized its sorting infrastructure and unified the processing of both Registered and Speed Post items. This integration will enhance backend efficiency, reduce transit delays, and offer better connectivity across the network,” Ministry of Communication said in a X post.

An individual can now send a ‘Registered Post’ with the speed of a ‘Speed Post’, India Post further added, stressing that it is “modernizing, not erasing.”

The Department of Posts on Monday announced that the Registered Post service will be discontinued on September 1, ending a service that has existed for over 50 years.

The Secretary and Director General of Posts have instructed all institutions that use this service, such as government departments, courts, and educational institutions, to complete the transition by this date.

The current shift came as a result of decline in demand for Registered Post, driven by increased digital adoption and competition from private courier services and e-commerce logistics.
