Shafiqur Rahman Barq, Samajwadi Party's MP Dies At 93

Samajwadi Party (SP) MP and Lok Sabha election candidate from Sambhal constituency died on Tuesday after a prolonged illness at 94. Barq was listed in the first candidate list of Uttar Pradesh. He was the oldest candidate of SP. Barq died at a private hospital in Moradabad.

SP chief Akhilesh Yadav also condoled the demise of Barq in a post on the microblogging site. He wrote, “The demise of senior Samajwadi Party leader and several-time MP Mr. Shafiqur Rahman Barq Saheb is extremely sad. May his soul rest in peace. May the bereaved family members get the strength to bear this immense sorrow. Heartfelt tribute!”

Shafiqur Rahman Barq, born on July 11, 1930, began his political career with Chaudhary Charan Singh. Barq, the five-time MP has spent most of his political career along with the Samajwadi party though he has joined the Bahujan Samaj Party in between. The veteran leader has also served as the coordinator of the Babri Masjid Action Committee. He was known for amplifying the voice of the Muslim community across the country. 

Barq has served as the founding member of the parliament five times. He won the Muradabad Lok Sabha seat three times (1996, 1998, 2004) and the Sambhal Lok Sabha seat twice (2009 and 2019). 

In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, though BJP was able to secure a record-breaking victory, sweeping 62 out of 80 assembly seats, the saffron party was unable to defeat the SP stalwart in Sambhal.
