"Shaming The Poor”: Saket Gokhale On PM Modi's Lighting Ram Mandir Will Remove Poverty Comment

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP, Saket Gokhale took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his comment about how lighting Ram Jyoti “will be an inspiration to remove poverty” from life. Gokhale accused Modi government to be the reason of why people are poor. In his X (formerly twitter) account, the TMC MP said people “They can’t “inspire themselves” to “not be poor”. Too much to expect from a man like you, but perhaps try to be sensitive instead of shaming the poor?”.

PM Modi on Friday said that his government is inspired by Lord Ram’s principles of governance with honesty. He urged people to light Ram Jyoti on January 22, and said that it will be an inspiration to remove poverty from their lives. He said. “Modi’s guarantee means ‘guarantee puri hone ki guarantee’. Lord Ram taught us to honour commitments made, and we are fulfilling all goals we set for the welfare of the poor and their empowerment”.

The Ram Mandir inauguration function will be organized on January 22 at 12:30 pm. In the presence of Narendra Modi and many other dignitaries, the consecration ceremony for the Ram temple will be held. Several public figures including actors and cricketers, have been invited for the event. Meanwhile, opposition leaders have announced that they will not be part of the event.

Congress has alleged that BJP has made a “political project” out of the temple in Ayodhya in attempt to gain vote in 2024 Lok Sabha election. Congress said that they do honour the sentiments of those who rever Lord Ram. Opposition leaders including Sharad Pawar and Arvind Kejriwal too has said that they would stay away from the ceremony.

Ram Mandir has been taken to the center stage in the election campaign. For ‘halting’ the event, BJP has accused Congress of disrespecting ‘Indian culture’.
