Congress veteran leader Sonia Gandhi, accompanied by daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, reached Tamil Nadu’s Chennai for attending the ruling DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) organized Women Rights Conference on Saturday. The programme urges central government to immediately implement the Women Reservation Bill, which was passed recently by the parliament, a historic move securing a golden feather to the Indian democracy.

Sonia Gandhi is the current Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson while Priyanka Gandhi serves as the party’s general secretary. Both of them were received by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, and DMK MP’s Kanimozhi Karunanidhi and TR Baalu. A huge number of Congress members were also assembled to welcome the national leaders at the Chennai international airport on Friday.

Sonia Gandhi is visiting Chennai after a gap of five years, and Congress ensures her to get a grand reception as Lok Sabha elections are on the way. Her last visit to Chennai was in December 2018 to unveil the statue of M Karunanidhi, who served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for almost two decades, at the DMK headquarters.

The conference, conducted by DMK’s women wing at Nandanam YMCA ground in Chennai, is said to be chaired by Chief Minister MK Stalin. They will amplify the urgent implementation of a 33 per cent reservation of women in Parliament as well as in state assemblies, following the Women Reservation Bill.

Accepting the invitation by the party’s deputy general secretary and MP K Kanimozhi, prominent women leaders including the former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti are expected to attend the conference with Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi.

Mr Stalin, meanwhile, expressed his gratitude to host “esteemed women leaders” around the country taking the matter to his official social media handles. “A powerful gathering of India”s leading women”s voices awaits!”, he noted with excitement sharing pictures of receiving the Congress women leaders at the airport on Friday.
