BJP MP Nishikant Dubey countered Sonia Gandhi’s remark on reservation for OBC women in the parliament session by citing an incident from 2012. He said Sonia Gandhi ‘tried to grab the collar’ of a Samajwadi party member during a debate in the parliament.
“In this same House, when V Narayanasamy was presenting a bill on promotional quota for SCs/STs, Samajwadi Party”s Yashvir Singh snatched the bill from his hand and tore it down. In this same Parliament, Madam Sonia Gandhi ji was the first to come and hold him by his collar,” he said.
“At that time, I told her (Sonia Gandhi) you are not our dictator, not a queen, you cannot resort to violence,” Nishikant Dubay said.
In December 2012, Yashvir Singh snatched the copy of the Constitution (117th Amendment) Bill from Narayanasamy in the Lok Sabha. Sonia Gandhi intervened and asked him what he was doing. She then tried to take back the papers from Yashvir Singh. Singh fell down as he tried to shake Sonia Gandhi off and lost her balance, as per Hindustan times.
This incident then led to clash between both the parties and strongly opposed the reservation in promotion for SCs and STs (Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes) in government jobs. Samajwadi party and Congress are allies in the INDIA bloc.
Replying to Sonia Gandhi”s question as to why the quota is not being implemented immediately, Nishikant Dubey said, “Why do you want to go against the Constitution? It”s written in the Constitution that first there will be a census and then there will be delimitation. Then it will be implemented.”
“I read all the speeches of this Ghamandiya alliance. When Sonia ji was speaking today, I expected she would rise above politics. Sonia ji did not take the name of Sushma Swaraj or Geeta Mukherjee, the two women who fought for this reservation the most. But you took the credit,” Dubey said.
Sonia Gandhi who led the party in the debate today extended her party’s support to the women reservation bill. She demanded the quota to be implemented immediately and SC, ST, and OBC women also to be given reservation following a caste census.
She also said that delaying the bill will be a gross injustice to every Indian woman as they have already waited for past 13 years.
The Constitution amendment bill was introduced on Wednesday in the Lok Sabha. This was the first bill to be discussed in the new Parliament building. The reservation will come into effect after the completion of the census and delimitation exercise.
