"Staggering": Jairam Ramesh On Extent Of Vacancies In AIIMS Faculties

New Delhi: Congress General Secretary in Charge of Communication, Jairam Ramesh, on Wednesday expressed shock over data related to vacancies in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) institutions in the country.

Calling it a disturbing statistic, the Congress leader took note that the extent of vacancies in faculty positions is “staggering,” while listing out the roles that remain vacant in the institution of national importance. He also shared the data provided by the ministry on his social media handle.

The faculty vacancies are 34 percent in AIIMS New Delhi, 24 percent in AIIMS Bhopal, 25 percent in AIIMS Bhubaneswar, 28 percent in AIIMS Jodhpur, 38 percent in AIIMS Raipur, 27 percent in AIIMS Patna, and 39 percent in AIIMS Rishikesh, the Rajya Sabha MP pointed out, adding that there are twelve cities where AIIMS-type institutions are partially operational.

The Congress leader further pointed out that the faculty shortages are 41 percent in Mangalgiri, 23 percent in Nagpur, 39 percent in Kalyani, 37 percent in Gorakhpur, 33 percent in Bathinda, 54 percent in Bilaspur (HP), 43 percent in Guwahati, 34 percent in Deogarh, 36 percent in Bibinagar (Telangana), 49 percent in Rae Bareli, 59.5 percent in Rajkot, and 44 percent in Jammu.

“What is most surprising is the position in the most prestigious AIIMS New Delhi itself, which in many ways is the mother institution,” Jairam Ramesh wrote in an X post, demanding the health minister give this the highest priority without diluting standards.

A public medical university and autonomous institution under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, AIIMS has been an institution of national importance with specialised treatment options and better infrastructure. The institution has been funded and managed by the Union Government.
