Telangana: 2 Infants Killed As Fire Erupts In Special Newborn Care Unit At Adilabad RIMS Hospital

Adilabad, Telangana: An sudden fire broke out late at night in the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Hospital in Telangana’s Adilabad on Monday. The incident has claimed lives of two infants, including a five-day-old baby. Several infants were injured and some in critical condition.

The fire is reportedly caused by a suspected air conditioner short circuit. After the fire was broke out, at least 24 to 28 other children were safely evacuated and shifted to other hospitals.

Adilabad collector Rajarshi Shah said that the incident occurred post-midnight following a short circuit in an air-conditioning unit. The AC exploded before flames and thick smoke spread through the ward, Shah said, adding that the hospital staff responded immediately. At least 27 newborns were undergoing treatment.

The fire caused panic among the attendants, who rushed out of the ward carrying their children. Reacting to the incident, Telangana chief minister A Revanth Reddy ordered an inquiry into the incident and directed officials to submit a report on the causes.
