On Tuesday, Pushkar Singh Dhami-led BJP government in Uttarakhand tabled the Uniform Civil Code Bill (UCC) in the state legislative assembly. The bill likely to be passed today after debates in the assembly. However, the opposition parties have voiced their dissent against the bill. All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) president and MP Badruddin Ajmal said: “This Bill should be dumped in the dustbin.”
Reacting to the UCC bill, Badruddin Ajmal told ANI: “India is a colourful garden. However beautiful a garden is, if it has just one flower, you will not be able to look at it for long. In India, people of all faiths, culture live. That is our beauty…If anything is done against nature, it won”t continue for long…State Assemblies have to bring something shiny when the government becomes a failure. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma too does this from time to time…They want to please PM Modi as they want to continue as the CM for some time. This Bill should be dumped in the dustbin.”

The proposed UCC aims to establish common set of laws applicable to all communities within the state. The UCC plans to establish a common law on subjects including marriage, divorce, land, property, and inheritance for all citizens irrespective of their religion in the state, excluding the Scheduled Tribes. A complete ban on polygamy and child marriage, a standardised marriageable age for girls across all faiths, and a uniform process for divorce are some of the key recommendations included in the bill. Besides, the proposed bill seeks mandatory registration on live-in relationships by submitting statements before the Registrar.
A government-appointed panel, led by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai, drafted a four-volume, 749-page report of containing several recommendations. The draft was submitted after collecting 2.33 lakh pieces of written feedback online and by organizing more than 70 public forums, reports NDTV.
A common civil code for the state was one of the major poll promises put forward by the BJP in the 2022 Assembly elections. Through its passage, Uttarakhand will be the first Indian state to adopt the UCC. Meanwhile, other BJP-rules states such as Gujarat and Assam extended their interest in adopting the Uttarakhand UCC model.
