Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said on Friday that he has received the draft of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) from the state government-appointed panel.

The draft was handed over to the chief minister by the five-member committee headed by retired Supreme Court Judge Ranjana Prakash Desai.

“The committee formed to prepare the draft for the purpose of implementing the Uniform Civil Code will submit the draft today at 11 a.m. in Dehradun. After reviewing this, we will move forward in the direction of implementing the Uniform Civil Code in the state by bringing a bill in the upcoming assembly session,” the chief minister wrote on X.

He also added that the day is of great importance as they are thriving forward with more strength by realising the vision of ‘Ek Bharat- Shreshtha Bharat’ of the country’s illustrious Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Earlier, the Uttarakhand government had committed that it would present the Uniform Civil Code bill in the state assembly during a special session, reports The Economic Times

While speaking to ANI, the chief minister said, “The committee formed to prepare the draft for the purpose of implementing the Uniform Civil Code will submit the draft today at 11 a.m. in Dehradun. The government will now place the bill during the session in the House. The Uttarakhand assembly session will be held from February 5 to 8 as per the notification by the Secretariat of the Assembly.  The panel was constituted in May 2022 to prepare a draft of the UCC. Constituted for six months initially, it was given four extensions to look into all aspects before finalising its report, reports The Telegraph Online.
