Dehradun Red Alert: Heavy Rains, Landslides & Floods Batter Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand: Heavy rains and cloudbursts on Monday night and into Tuesday have left large parts of Dehradun district and neighbouring areas of Uttarakhand reeling.

The district was placed under a red alert by IMD (India Meteorological Department) as rivers swelled, roads were damaged, landslides blocked routes and multiple areas were flooded. State and central rescue teams, including the NDRF and SDRF, are carrying out round-the-clock relief and evacuation work.

A severe spell of rain and localised cloudbursts beginning late on 15 September 2025 caused sudden flooding in low-lying and riverine areas of Dehradun.

Sahastradhara, Maldevta and parts of Mussoorie reported widespread damage to roads, shops and local infrastructure. In several places—Tapkeshwar, the DIT College area, Rajpur Shikhar Falls and Bhagat Singh Colony—residents were swept away by fast-moving water; at least five people have reportedly been swept away. Separate reports say two people were missing after the floods.

Photos and video circulating from the worst-hit spots show dramatic rescue scenes: NDRF personnel pulling a man from an electric pole near Prem Nagar as a river surged past, and residents standing by a caved-in portion of a bridge near Maldevta.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has reported rescuing more than 100 people, including students from Devbhoomi Institute; officials say 300–400 people have been moved to safer locations so far.

Areas affected

  • Sahastradhara (Dehradun): Flooding damaged roads and shops; local rescues were carried out late Monday night.

  • Maldevta / Prem Nagar: Bridge damage and dramatic river rescues reported.

  • Mussoorie: Landslide debris and at least one reported death; roads affected.

  • Tehri: Waterlogging left residents stranded at places such as Geeta Bhawan; evacuations were completed.

  • Nainital: A road was blocked by landslide debris after heavy rain upstream.

  • Dehradun IT Park: Offices reported water ingress, leaving people trapped until rescue teams arrived.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said he was personally monitoring the situation and visiting affected areas with local MLAs and senior officials.

The Chief Minister’s Office posted that Mr. Dhami had briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who both assured the state of “all possible assistance” from the Centre.

Disaster Management Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman confirmed damage reports from Sahastradhara, Maldevta and Mussoorie and said teams were engaged in relief operations. Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Sadar, Hari Giri, described the Song River’s rising flow and urged caution as the water level remained high and powerful, as per a PTI  video.

NDRF, SDRF, local police and district administration teams are deployed in multiple locations for search, rescue and evacuation. Efforts continue through the night in areas where rivers remain in spate and where landslide risk is still high.

People in flash-flood-prone zones were hurriedly moved to safer ground; students and hotel guests in tourist areas were among those rescued. Several households and small shopkeepers reported property damage. Local authorities are compiling lists of those affected and moving families to temporary relief centres where possible.
