Upon arriving in Kanpur with her friend to meet her boyfriend, a 27-year-old Indore-based transwoman set fire to her boyfriend”s car in a fit of rage after he declined to marry her. The incident occurred on Sunday night, when the boyfriend, identified as Vibhav Shukla’s Ertiga, was engulfed in flames fueled by approximately 2 litres of petrol. Kanpur police have arrested the accused and her accomplice friend.

According to police reports, the accused arrived in Kanpur from Indore following a dispute with Shukla regarding their relationship’s future. The two had connected through Instagram and had been involved in a long-distance relationship since 2021. However, tensions arose when Shukla refused to commit to marriage and stopped talking to the accused, leading to the accused’s decision to travel to Kanpur.

Upon arrival, the accused and a friend rented a scooter and headed straight to Shukla’s residence in Shyam Nagar, where his car was parked. Fueled by anger over the refusal to marry and feelings of betrayal, the accused poured gasoline on the vehicle and set it on fire.

The authorities were alerted by neighbours of Shukla, prompting a swift response from the police. With the help of the CCTV footage, the police identified the accused and conducted a search operation. Eventually, they apprehended the accused, who was attempting to flee the scene with the friend.

The accused confessed to the crime, citing the disloyalty of her partner. Allegedly, the accused had spent several lakhs to undergo sex-reassignment and breast surgery in 2022 on the insistence of Shukla, who allegedly promised to marry the accused. When the topic of marriage cropped up again, the accused alleged Shukla had refused to marry her, citing her inability to conceive his children.

The accused, identified as Deep, and her friend, Rohan Yadav, are residents of Indore.

“The trans woman has also filed a case in Indore under Section 377 of the IPC (voluntarily having carnal intercourse against the order of nature), which is being investigated by the Indore police. The transwoman said that she had destroyed her boyfriend’s car in revenge for his unfaithfulness to her. We have also arrested his friend. The investigation is continuing,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP) Harish Chandra, as quoted in a Times of India report.
