Forced by the criminal proceedings against her, Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje on Tuesday apologised for her controversial remark made on the backdrop of the Rameshwaram Cafe blast in Bengaluru in March this year. The Union Minister filed an affidavit before the Madras High Court, issuing an apology to the people of Tamil Nadu and seeking to quash the criminal proceedings against her.

Following the blast in the Bengaluru cafe on March 1, the Karandlaje made the controversial remark, blaming Tamil people for the incident, saying Tamilians are coming to Karnataka for planting bombs. Chief Minister MK Stalin had demanded hate speech case against the Union Minister for her comment. The Madurai police had registered a case against her in the remark and the proceedings were continuing.

In her affidavit, the Union Minister pointed out that she had already retracted her previous comments and tendered her apologies through social media platforms back then. She said that her remarks were made while addressing the media without any intention to hurt the sentiments and feelings of the people of Tamil Nadu.

“The comment made by me about the people of Tamil Nadu while addressing the media about the Rameshwaram café bomb blast case in Bengaluru was made without any intention to hurt the sentiments and feelings of the people of Tamil Nadu. Having understood that my comments had hurt the sentiments of some people, I have already retracted my previous remarks and tendered my profound apologies through social media platforms,” the Union Minister said, Indian Today quoted.

However, there has been criticism over the inaction by the political party against the controversial remark. In a social media post, journalist Sushant Singh wrote, “A union minister who tells a vicious lie is forced to apologize by the court. But no political consequence at all as a member of the union ministry.”
