A scam reportedly unearthed in the mass Hindu wedding ceremony conducted in Uttar Pradesh“s Ballia as many brides garlanded themselves without grooms present. The ceremony occurred in January 25,  and the event is hosted by the state social welfare department at Maniyar Inter College, Ballia. As per the reports, 568 couples participated in the ceremony under the Chief Minister’s Mass Marriage Scheme, where marriage ceremonies for young men and women are conducted.

However, controversy erupted as it has been found that several participants had faked the event to access the state money. In this Group Marriage Scheme, state spent a payment of Rs. 51,000 on each couple, where Rs 35,000 goes to the bride’s bank account, ₹10,000 for purchasing matrimonial materials and ₹6,000 for the event, the government website states. There are also allegations that many brides and grooms who had already married were married again to access the benefits.

As the video of the several brides garlanded themselves went viral, the Chief Development Officer Ojasvi Raj ordered an investigation into the matter. An inquiry committee was formed in this regard on January 29. An FIR has been registered against the Assistant Development Officer of social welfare of the Maniyar block, and eight beneficiaries were found guilty in the investigation, District magistrate Ravindra Kumar said. He added that action will be taken against anyone else found guilty.

District Magistrate stated that funds have not yet been allocated to the beneficiaries.
