Reacting to the arrest of the former Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee said that it is a vindictive act by the BJP-backed central agencies to undermine a popularly elected government. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader resigned as the chief minister of Jharkhand following the questioning by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for the alleged money laundering to the land scam case. The ED had conducted a raid at his residence in Delhi and claimed to have seized a BMW car and ₹36 lakh. However, Hemant Soren has filed a petition against the ED officials who carried out a search at his residence.
Mamata Banerjee today said she strongly condemns the “unjust arrest” of Mr Hemant and vowed that she stands unwaveringly by his side, dedicated to protecting democracy in these trying times. “The resilient people of Jharkhand will deliver a resounding response and emerge victorious in this crucial battle,” the West Bengal Chief Minister added in her post on X (formerly Twitter).
“I strongly condemn the unjust arrest of Shri Hemant Soren, a powerful tribal leader. The vindictive act by BJP-backed central agencies reeks of a planned conspiracy to undermine a popularly elected government. He is a close friend of mine, and I vow to stand unwaveringly by his side, dedicated to protecting democracy in these trying times,” Banerjee wrote on her X handle.

The JMM has been accusing the Centre of trying to destabilise the state government and many opposition parties have also raised concern over the developments. With the arrest of Hemant Soren at the Raj Bhavan yesterday, the party projected the veteran leader and the Transport Minister Champai Soren as the next chief minister.
Notably, Champai Soren took oath today as the chief minister of Jharkhand. As per the report, Champai has been asked to show his government’s majority in 10 days to continue as the chief minister.
