Virudhunagar Firecracker Unit Blast Kills At Least 23: Second Explosion Disrupts Rescue
At least 23 workers lost their lives, and more than 12 others were injured in a massive explosion at a private firecracker unit in Kattanarpatti village, Virudhunagar district, on Sunday.
The incident, one of the deadliest in recent times, has once again raised serious concerns about safety standards in fireworks manufacturing units.
According to preliminary police findings, the blast occurred around 3 pm at a DRO-licensed facility owned by Muthumanickam (52), when nearly 50 employees were present on the premises.
Officials believe the explosion originated in the front veranda area, where workers were handling raw materials. The impact was so severe that at least four rooms were destroyed, and nearby structures were also levelled.
During rescue operations later in the evening, a second explosion around 7 pm left several people injured, including police personnel, media workers, and members of the fire and rescue services.

Despite the setback, rescue teams continued operations, battling flames for several hours.
Authorities have so far identified 16 victims, while the remaining bodies are being identified.
The deceased and injured have been shifted to the Government Virudhunagar Medical College Hospital.
Among the injured are several workers and a 12-year-old boy who was reportedly at the site. Two of the injured are said to be in critical condition with severe burn injuries.

Senior officials, including district police and administration authorities, are overseeing the rescue and relief efforts. The tragedy comes just days after another explosion in the same district claimed four lives, highlighting recurring safety lapses.
Leaders across the country have expressed condolences. Droupadi Murmu, Narendra Modi, and M. K. Stalin conveyed their sympathies to the victims’ families and wished a speedy recovery for the injured. The state government is expected to announce compensation soon.
Meanwhile, opposition leaders have criticised the administration, pointing to the increasing number of such accidents in recent years and calling for stricter enforcement of safety regulations in firecracker units.
