Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief over the death of Tamil actor and DMDK chief Vijayakanth, who died at a private hospital in Chennai on Thursday.
Taking to his X account, PM wrote, “Extremely saddened by the passing away of Thiru Vijayakanth Ji. A legend of the Tamil film world, his charismatic performances captured the hearts of millions. As a political leader, he was deeply committed to public service, leaving a lasting impact on Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.”
He added, “His passing leaves a void that will be hard to fill. He was a close friend and I fondly recall my interactions with him over the years. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with his family, fans and numerous followers. Om Shanti”.

Vijayakanth was admitted to MIOH hospital in Chennai as his health deteriorated. He was on ventilatory support following his admission for pneumonia.
A statement by the hospital read, “Captain Vijayakanth was on ventilatory support following his admission for pneumonia. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, he passed away in the morning on 28th December 2023.”
Earlier this day, his party members has said that Vijayakanth had tested positive for COVID and was put on a ventilator due to breathing issues. Since November, the actor has been facing health issues.
Vijayakanth was the leader of the opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly from 2011 to 2016. He also served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly twice.
