The state of Manipur witnessed violence following a deadly rocket attack on September 6, killing one person. Violence intensified on September 7 as five fatalities were reported in Jiribam district. The fresh spurt of violence comes when the state was slowly returning to normalcy after the ethnic clashes between the Kukis and the Meiteis since May last year.
1. On Saturday, an RPG attack in Moirang, Bishnupur district, led to the death of an elderly man. Another explosion in Trounglaobi village caused significant damage, though no injuries were reported. A total of eight people have died with over 12 injured so far in the fresh wave of violence, as per India Today.

2. On Tuesday, the state government imposed a five-day ban on mobile internet, broadband, and VPN in Manipur. The internet ban comes in response to the rising violence and ongoing student protests.
3. Chief minister N Biren Singh held an emergency meeting with MLAs from the ruling coalition, comprising the BJP, Naga People’s Front, and National Peoples Party (NPP) on Sunday.
4. The government issued an order stating an apprehension that some anti-social elements might use social media “extensively for transmission of images, hate speech, and hate video messages inciting the passions of the public,” resulting in serious repercussions for the law-and-order situation in Manipur.
5. Hundreds of students from schools and colleges set up camps at Imphal’s Khwairamband Women Market on Monday. Calling for the protection of Manipur’s “territorial and administrative integrity,” the protesting students demanded action against those behind the recent drone and missile attacks.
6. As student and women protestors clashed with security forces during their march towards the Raj Bhavan, the tear gas shells were fired. They protestors sought to remove the DGP and security advisor to the Manipur government, as per reports.
7. Manipur’s Directorate of School Education announced that all educational institutions, including government, government-aided, private, and central schools, will remain closed on September 9 and 10 to ensure the safety of students and teachers.
8. State Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Tuesday appealed to all sections of the society, student organisations and public leaders to establish peace and help the state move towards growth and development.

9. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi criticised the central government and the Prime Minister for their silence over their silence on the issue. “The Prime Minister’s indifference is unforgivable,” slammed Gandhi.
10. Since May 2023, the ethnic violence between the Meitei community in Imphal Valley and Kuki-Zo groups in the nearby hills has resulted in over 200 deaths and thousands of homeless.
