The preamble reads: “We, the people of India, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a sovereign socialist secular democratic republic…”

As India celebrates 75th Republic Day on Friday, Government of India on social media shared old preamble of the Constitution as “The Original Preamble to India”s Constitution” excluding the words “Secular” and “Socialist”. In the highlighted headline, “How is New India faring on the principles it laid down?” it shares a series of advancements and achievements “New India” attained under “Sovereignty”, “Democracy”, “Republic” and “Justice”, “Liberty”, “Equality”, and “Fraternity”.

“As we celebrate 75 years of the Republic of India, let”s revisit the original Preamble of our Constitution. How well does New India resonate with these foundational principles? Take a look to embark on a journey through time, exploring how India has evolved while staying true to its roots,” MyGov wrote on their Instagram handle.

MyGov is an citizen engagement platform launched by the Central government to promote active participation of citizens in country”s governance and development.

In the first picture the “old preamble” is being presented as “original preamble” and in the subsequent images, government”s work has been highlighted.

The post has been receiving lots of flak and users in the comments questioned the misrepresentation of the constitution”s Preamble.

The words “socialist” and “secular” were added in 1976 by the 42nd constitutional amendment to the Preamble of the Constitution.

Earlier, the two words were omitted in the copies of the constitution given to the parliamentary members during the opening day of the new Parliament building.
