The Women Reservation Bill is the Constitutional form of Hindu Goddess “Lakshmi”, said the Union Minister Smriti Irani addressing the parliament on Wednesday.

Smriti Zubin Irani is currently serving as the Minister of Women, Child Development, and Minority Affairs for the federal government ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Ms Irani was participating in the debate session of the Women Reservation Bill named ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’, which was introduced by the Union government on Tuesday. The bill reserves 33% of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.

“If we look from the perspective of the dignity of the Constitution, then (Goddess) Lakshmi has taken a Constitutional form through this (Women“s Reservation) Bill“, the minister said addressing the Lok sabha.

The bill, named Women’s Reservation Bill, or The Constitution (One Hundred and Eighth Amendment) Bill, was introduced to Rajya Sabha initially in 2008 by the then Manmohan Singh-led UPA government. The Rajya Sabha passed it in 2010 but failed to reach in Lok Sabha and eventually lapsed.

“The Congress had proposed women”s quota for not more than 15 years, but BJP guarantees reservation of seats for women”, said Ms Irani expressing gratitude towards the Prime Minister and Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal for not allowing the desire of the Congress to become a reality.

“Today, those who called it Jumla and said that it happened because they wrote several letters for it, at least they accepted that they kept insulting him (PM Modi) but he read each of their communications and discussed it with them”, Ms Irani added.

She also attacked Congress and Sonia Gandhi by saying, “When this bill was brought, some people said that it is “our bill”…UPA chairman Sonia Gandhi in an article of the proposed bill had said that “no seat shall be reserved for women for belonging to SC/ST in the third general elections”.

“But the bill brought by this government guarantees reservation to women till 15 years after the implementation of this bill”, minister added addressing Lok Sabha.
