Malappuram: A 14-year-old schoolgirl was raped and murdered in Kerala’s Malappuram district, allegedly by her 16-year-old male friend, police said on Friday.
The body of the Class 9 student was found in a bushy area near the railway tracks at Vaniyambalam, close to Nilambur, around 17 kilometres from her home.
She was wearing her school uniform when police recovered the body.

According to police, the girl had left home on Thursday morning for school but did not return. Concerned family members later filed a missing persons complaint at the Karuvarakundu police station.
Her mobile phone was briefly switched on around 6 pm on Thursday, during which she told her mother that she was nearby and would return soon. After that call, all attempts to contact her failed.
An overnight search was carried out by family members, residents, and the police, but no leads were found. The case took a turn after police questioned a male schoolmate, who later confessed to the crime.
Police said the girl’s hands and legs were tied using clothes taken from her school bag.
Her bag and footwear were found near the body. During interrogation, the accused admitted to luring her to the isolated location, tying her up, raping her, and killing her by suffocation. He later led police to the crime scene, but no clues were found.
The case took a serious turn after police questioned a male schoolmate.
Police said the accused initially claimed that the 14-year-old girl had died after being hit by a train. However, officers grew suspicious after noticing that the body was found above the railway tracks, along with visible injuries and clear signs that the victim had been tied up.
Based on a complaint filed by the girl’s mother, the Karuvarakundu police registered a case and took the accused, a Plus Two student, into custody.
Investigators revealed that the boy had earlier been accused twice of stalking and harassing the girl.
Police also said the accused had previously threatened the victim’s family and had confronted her mother at the police station after they objected to his behaviour.
Officers, along with the suspect, later visited the crime scene, which is located more than ten kilometres away from the town. Local residents believe the accused may have used a motorcycle to reach the isolated location.
Meanwhile, the victim’s relatives have expressed doubts that the accused acted alone.
Citing the brutality of the crime and the remote terrain, they have demanded a detailed and thorough investigation, including questioning people familiar with the area.
