Byju’s Founder Byju Raveendran Sentenced To 6 Months In Jail By Singapore Court

Byju’s founder, Byju Raveendran has been sentenced to six months in jail by a Singapore court in a contempt of court case, according to reports.

The latest development marks another major setback for the edtech company, once considered one of India’s most valuable startups.

As per Bloomberg, the court found that Raveendran violated multiple court orders linked to his assets dating back to April 2024.

The court also directed him to surrender to authorities, pay SGD 90,000, and provide documents proving his ownership of Beeaar Investco Pte, a corporate entity connected to the case.

Reacting to the order, Byju Raveendran said the matter was being misunderstood and clarified that the case was related to procedural issues over document disclosure, not fraud or dishonesty.

In a statement shared on X, he said settlement discussions between founders, lenders and stakeholders were already in advanced stages.

Raveendran also claimed that all parties had agreed in principle not to aggressively pursue legal action while working towards a final settlement. However, he expressed disappointment over the timing of the court action.

He has been directed to appear again before the court on June 15. Meanwhile, Byju’s legal team is reportedly considering filing an appeal against the sentence.
