A cleaning worker has gone missing in a canal in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday. The incident occurred while he was cleaning the Amayizhanchan canal near the Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station on Saturday.
Joy, a resident of Marayamuttom, was swept off by the currents while cleaning the canal which was used as a waste dumping zone. The search for the worker has entered a crucial stage on Sunday. As part of the rescue operation, two scuba divers of the Fire Force entered two manholes on Platform Number 4 of the railway station to inspect 17 meters of the sewage tunnel.

However, the team was unable to locate the 47-year-old. The officials had decided to pump water to the manholes to flush out the waste and mud as the operation had failed.
The scuba divers had searched thrice on Sunday. But due to the presence of sewage water including the toiler water flowing through it, the operation was a difficult task.
The rescue operation has now completed 33 hours. Joy went missing around 11 am on Saturday. The waste pile which formed as a rock inside the canal has been hindering the search since Saturday. They searched the 140-meter stretch of the canal through a robotic camera, but no human trave was found.
The canal was filled with plastic and hard waste and the rains have been hampering the rescue operation, officials had said.
Along with Joy, two others were too engaged in cleaning the canal. The increase in water flow due to heavy rain in the region led to the accident. Two cleaning staff has managed to escape while Joy got trapped.
